Even though Fedor Emelianenko was already the Pride FC heavyweight champ in 2004, Pride decided to hold a heavyweight tournament. This is the first installment of the 3 part event.
Content Rating: 4/5
Below is a little recap for each fight with ratings.(Fight recap has spoiler button so I can discuss the fights further. Click on “show”).
1. Heath Herring vs. Yoshiki Takahashi - 3.5
This is a pretty good fight. It’s a bit uneven, but provided some decent action.
Herring almost got caught by the guillotine choke. The choke attempt got Takahashi tired. Herring broke free and took advantage. He pounded Takahashi’s face to victory.
2. Murillo “Ninja” Rua vs. Sergei Kharithonov - 4
An entertaining match-up with a lot of technical, striking action. Although Ninja normally fights at 205lbs., he decided to fight a natural HW to represent his Chute Boxe team.
Rua was just too small for this fight. Sergei is a solid HW with great boxing skills. In the end, Ninja got brutally KO’d. But, Ninja deserves credit for fighting a heavier opponent.
3. Giant Silva vs. Sentoryu - 1.5
A freak show of a match. There’s nothing much to see here. Both fighters are sloppy with no technical skills. This felt like a WWE match.
Meh
4. Semmy Schilt vs. Gan McGee - 3
A decent fight between two giants. A pretty good fight, but i expected to see more stand-up.
Both fighters didn’t look too impressive. Schilt has a good defense from the bottom. But, McGee should have done more damage from the top, but seemed lazy. For a big guy, Schilt has good submissions.
5. Stefan Leko vs. Naoya Ogawa - 3.5
This fight is fast-paced and entertaining. Fairly uneven, but still fun to watch.
Leko is a great kickboxer but mma is just not for him. Pride wanted Ogawa to win, so they gave him, the unexperienced, Leko.
6. Mirko “cocop” Filipovic vs. Kevin Randleman - 5
A great fight between two explosive fighters. It’s, arguably, the best fight of the night.
This was a huge upset. Mirko was suppose to make it all the way to the final round. But, Randleman had other plans. One of the greatest moments in Pride history.
7. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Hirotaka Yokoi - 4
An interesting match-up between the judoka and the bjj wizard. It is mainly on the ground with a little bit of stand-up as well. A good tactical fight.
Nogueira is just awesome on the ground. His defense and offense are top-notch. Yokoi surprisingly held his ground until the second round when Noguiera caught him with the anaconda choke. This move was never used in mma prior to this fight.
8. Mark Coleman vs. Fedor Emelianenko - 4.5
This fight is a good way to finish the event. Mark Coleman, the former UFC champ, is pitted against Pride’s current HW king in Fedor. This fight is explosive from the start.
Coleman is a strong wrestler with a very good submission defense. But, Fedor is another story. Nobody thought that Fedor would be able to pull an armbar from the bottom of Coleman, but he did. Fedor has it all. He has good boxing skills, he can pound you from the top, and submit you from the bottom. A good fight between two mma legends.
Video Score: 2.5/5
Absolute Countdown is presented in 4:3, which means it’s not in widescreen. Video compression for the video is awful, it looks like VHS quality: blurry and full of ghosting(double images). It also has a white wash which makes the contrast pretty bad.
Audio Score 3.5/5
The DVD is presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital. Audio is better than the video but still far from perfect. It lacks bass and the commentators voices sounds a little bit high pitched.
Special Features Score: 0/5
Another typical Pride FC extra bullcrap. Fighter bios, ring girls, Pride rules, and a lot more useless info. They actually burned the extras in a separate DVD so that they can sell a 2-disc set. Don’t pay attention to the back of the DVD covers either because it LIES about certain extras, like the fighter featurettes. It does not exist. All in all, buy this event for the first disc, then throw away the second disc.
Conclusion:
This event had great fighters and the techniques shown were very impressive. Quality of the DVD is poor and the extras are even worse. Instead of wasting the second disc with worthless extras, they should have split up the event into two disc. That way, compression would have been better. Worth a rental.
