UFC 71 was an exciting event. Well known fighters fought in the event and most did not disappoint. Some of the prelim matches were entertaining as well.

Below is a little recap for each fight with ratings.(Fight recap has spoiler button so I can discuss the fights further. Click on “show”).

Salaverry Terry Martin

Wilson Gouveia vs. Carmelo Marrero - 4
An entertaining match-up, mainly in the stand-up.
Gouvea’s kicks are pretty impressive. Morrero had nothing on him. Gouvea was picking his shots carefully, and landed everytime Morrero tries to take him down.
Jeremy Stephens vs. Din Thomas - 4
A better fight than expected. It pits the UFC veteran (Thomas) against the rookie (Stephens.) Both fighters are constantly trying to push the pace.
Stephens is brought in as a stepping stone for Din Thomas. The UFC wants to build Thomas because they’ve already marketed him in the TUF show. Stephens showed a lot of heart but got caught by an armbar in the second round.
Alan Belcher vs. Sean Salmon - 2.5

A quick, disappointing fight. It ends too quick.
Did Salmon even train for this fight? This is the UFC, step up your game or you’ll embarrass yourself.
Thiago Silva vs. James Irvin - 1.5

Ends in a freak accident. This had the potential to be a good fight, but failed to deliver. Too bad.
This could have been a bar burner but Irvin injured his leg.
Chris Leben vs. Kalib Starnes - 3.5
A decent fight between two ultimate fighter alumnis. A lot of sloppy stand-up exchanges.
2 guys that i could not care less for. However, they did come to fight. The striking is sloppy. At times, it felt like a sparring match. Oh well, at least they tried.
Keith Jardine vs. Houston Alexander - 4

This is an exciting brawl between the 2 light-heavyweights.
Jardine deserved what he got for overlooking Alexander. It shows how strong Alexander is. it is rare to see a fighter get dazed from punches in the clinch. After the first punch landed on Jardine’s temple, Jardine became Alexander’s favorite punching bag. Good, entertaining action.
Terry Martin vs. Ivan Salaverry - 2
One of the fighter in this match-up likes to collect paychecks, which is what he did in this fight. I hope that the UFC never invites this guy again.
Salaverry is a joke. He had potential to be the next big thing but something happened to this guy. It’s a disappointment to see fighters come in and lose in an embarassing fashion. If they don’t care about fighting anymore, then they shouldn’t fight.
Parisyan Burkman
Karo Parisyan vs. Josh Burkman - 3
An explosive first round, but the rest is anything but. It’s still a decent fight but i expected more.
Parisyan’s judo throws are impressive, but he needs work in his stand-up. Burkman landed some good punches but not enough to knock Parisyan down. This was a disappointing fight, especially for Parisyan. He’s been asking for a title shot but the way he fought, he doesn’t deserve it yet.
Chuck Liddell vs. Quintin Jackson - 4.5

An awesome title fight between the 2 light-heavyweights. This is a rematch. The first match was in Japan where Jackson defeated Liddell. All stand-up
Liddell got caught with a counter-hook from Jackson. Liddell threw a bodyshot but forgot to cover up. Rampage took advantage of it and knocked Chuck down.
Video Score: 4.5/5
The DVD is presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Colors are crisp and vibrant and looked natural. I’ve noticed that the quality is better than UFC’s previous efforts, it looks less compressed. It’s not a perfect video since it breaks up once in a while.

Liddell Jackson

Audio Score 4.5/5
Even though Dolby Digital 5.1 would have been nice, the 2.0 Dolby Track is still clear and clean. The commentators can be heard clearly and the track doesn’t break apart.

Special Features Score: 4.5/5
A 30 minute mini-documentary that follows Burkman, Parisyan, Liddell, and Jackson. It shows what fighers do a couple of days before their fights. I always give UFC a lot of credit for adding mini-documentaries as extras. Having Rampage as part of the documentary is always a plus. He’s a funny guy.

Conclusion:

UFC 71 was a good event because it had significant matches, especially Liddell vs. Jackson. I was also surprised to see the event in widescreen and setting a new benchmark on MMA DVD’s.

DVD Score: 4.5/5 (not an average)
