UFC: 84 ILL WILL Recap



Holy crap! This has to be the best MMA event so far in 2008. Out of the fights that were shown only one fight went to the judges. Since the fights weren’t too long, they showed a total of 9 fights. Below is a review of each fight. Minor spoilers ahead. But I won’t tell you who won, just what made it interesting/boring. Rating is based on a 10 point scale with 10 being the best.

Prelims Shown:

John Koppenhaver vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Surprisingly exciting, but too short. Impressive techniques shown.
Rating - 7.5

Kazuhiro Nakamura vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Some decent striking but the rest was mediocre. Ending was a bit weird.
Rating - 7

Rousimar Palhares vs. Ivan Salaverry
I didn’t care for the fight because Salaverry only collects paychecks. Good submission skills shown.
Rating - 6

Main Card

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes
Even though it was short, it was entertaining. It wasn’t as one-sided as I thought it’d be. I’d rate this higher but one fighter lost heart in the middle of the fight.
Rating: 6.5

Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz
Very emotional fight since it could be Tito’s last in the UFC. I’m a big fan of both so I didn’t really know who to root for. Slow paced fight but the last minute or so of each round were pretty interesting. Also it had one of the funniest moments in MMA History(an extra .5).

Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
Back and forth battle between a UFC veteran and a first timer. Enjoyed it from beginning to finish.
Rating: 8

Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva
The most exciting fight of the night. A bit short but it ended in devastating fashion.
Rating: 9

BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk (lightweight title)
More boring than I expected. But the ending made up for it.
Rating: 7.5

Overal Rating: 9 (Not an average)
This one is worth $44.99. Enjoyed the event because most of the fights were fairly even. It looked like there would be some one sided fights but all of the fighters gave it their best and had enough skills to back it up. Plus they showed a total of 9 fights. When was the last time UFC did that?
